Tour description:

Books of famous Swiss traveler Ella Mailart became for many tourists the guide to Central Asia. In the thirties of XX century she made unbelievable for that time trip around Central Asian republics. Without money, with only bag and camera she came to Tashkent by freight and passenger train. Our trip also begins in Tashkent!


Day 1

  Arrival in Tashkent Airport. You will be met and transferred to hotel. Hotel check-in. Time for discussion tour program and other details with our company representative. Free time. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 2
Tashkent - Samarkand 

Ella Mailart left Tashkent and flew to Samarkand by small triple plane “Yunkers”. It gave her an opportunity to see caravan routes of the Great Silk Route in bird’s eye view. But we’re going to Samarkand by modern high-speed train “Afrosiab”.


Early breakfast.

07:00 Transfer to Tashkent railway station.

08:00 Depart from Tashkent to Samarkand by high-speed train “Afrosiab”

10:08 Arrival in Samarkand. Transfer to the hotel, check-in.

Sightseeing tour of Samarkand with visiting: Gur Emir Mausoleum (Tamerlan's tomb), Ruhabad Mausoleum, Registan Square (a heart of the city), Bibi-Hanum Mosque, orient bazaar Siyab, Shahi Zinda Necropolis and Ulugbek’s Observatory. We’ll also visit Mausoleum of Khodja Doniyor known as Saint Daniel. Free time. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 3
Samarkand - Bukhara

Ella Mailart was very sorry to leave Samarkand. But there were a lot of interesting site must to be seen. At first she arrived to Kagan by train and then local people brought her up to Bukhara. So Bukhara is waiting for us also!


Breakfast. Transfer to Bukhara (270km). On the way we can visit workshop of famous Uzbek pottery master Abdulla Narzullaev in Gijduvan city. There you can learn how ceramics are making and even buy some of them. Arrival in Bukhara, check in the hotel. Free time. Overnight at the hotel. 

Day 4

During her staying in Bukhara, she leaved in one of the hudjra (cell) of abandoned madrassa. This oriental city was very strange for her, but she loved Bukhara with all her heart!


Breakfast in the hotel.

Sightseeing tour of Bukhara with visiting Samanids Mausoleum, Chashma-Ayub Mausoleum, Bolo Hauz Mosque, Ark Fortress, Minorai-Kalon and Poi-Kalon Mosque, Miri-Arab Madrassah, Toki-Zargaron, Kosh Madrassah (Ulugbek and Abdulazizkhan), Magoki Attari MosqueLyabi Hause ansemble.


We’ll also visit three trading domes (covered bazaars). In XVI century it was the center for trade of silk, jewelry and even for money exchange. Today tourists can also buy here different souvenirs of a wide range: from small souvenir magnets to the famous Bukhara carpets.

 Dinner with folk show in Nadir Divanbegi Madrassah. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 5
Bukhara – Khiva

22 miles from Urgench to Khiva Ella Mailart moved by mail bullock-cart. She was sitting on leather bags with letters and parcels. We’ll pass this distance by comfort bus / car.


Breakfast. Transfer to Khiva via the Kizil Kum desert (475 км). On the way stop to see Amudarya River. Arrival in Khiva in the afternoon, check–in the hotel. Free time. Overnight at the hotel. 

Day 6

Ella Mailart called Khiva the city of nightingales. She liked the city, but most of all - its Khan's Palaces with walls all decorated by interesting ornaments. We also have a chance to visit Khan's Palaces and Khiva, an open air museum in Central Asia.


Breakfast.  Sightseeing tour in Ichan Kala (Inner town:  Ata Darbaza (West Gate), Kunya Ark, Muhammad Rakhim-Khan Madrassa, Muhammad Aminkhan Madrassa, Kalta Minor Minaret, Jome Mosque and Minaret, Islam Khodja Madrassa and Minaret, Said Alauddin Mausoleum, Pahlavan Mahmud Mausoleum, the last Khiva Khan Allakulikhan’s Madrassa and Tosh Hovli Palace where was the harem with 40 concubines, Caravanserai and Tim Allakulikhan.

 Free time. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 7
Khiva - Urgench - Tashkent

Ella Mailart liked to sit at the top of Minaret Islam Khodja. She wrote in her book: “I can see the Kizil Kum desert there, in the west, behind the oasis.” The desert attracted her and she continued her daring journey, had going through the Kizil Kum desert in late autumn…

But our journey comes to the end and we’re going to Tashkent.

Early breakfast.

07:30 Transfer to Urgench, local airport.

09:20 Flight to Tashkent

10:50 Arrival in Tashkent. Transfer to the hotel, check-in.


Ella Mailart liked Tashkent and most of all – its old part, narrow streets and mahallas. They attracted her and all her days she spent in old city, sitting near mausoleums, walking and speaking to local people.


After lunch sightseeing tour of Tashkent begins with visiting old part of the city: Architectural Complex Khast Imam (Mausoleum of imam Kaffal al-Shashi, Barak-khan Madrassah, Tellya Sheikh Madrassah, Mui-Mubarak Madrassah, Juma Mosque, Imam Ismail al-Bukhari Islamic Institute), Hadra square, Kukeldash Medressa, bazaar Chorsu.


Then we’ll visit European part of the city: Amir Timur Square, Theatre SquareIndependence Square, Monument of Courage, Tashkent TV Tower and Memorial to the Victims of Repression.

Free-time. Overnight at the hotel. 

Day 8

Breakfast in the hotel.
Transfer to the airport. Depart Tashkent. End of the tour.
